MANY MOODS MAKING MUSIC

The season begins with four moody works: among the many moods of Bliss is an Irish jig; Martinu's music is bright and aggressive; while Dohnanyi's work has been described as "Hollywood Hungarian-style."

SPELLBINDING SOUNDS

This concert is a delight to watch and to hear. Crumb's music calls for masks, special lighting and amplification. Uruguayan Crespo perfectly translates folklore and feelings of his home into excitingly virtuosic brass music. Among the towering masterpieces of Beethoven's entire output, this trio surely marks the summit of his production for that medium. Rounding out the program is a work by one of America's most substantial but often-overlooked composers, Vincent Persichetti.

THAT SOUNDS FISHY

Schubert serves a musical helping of a fish dish. Brass fishers will catch two great works, a Bach-inspired hit by Dahl and a sharply-etched gem exploiting brass colors and sonorities by Lutoslawski. Add soprano and a blend of classical and jazz idioms and you will bait Previn's fish story.

ICA IN SCHAUMBURG

Uruguayan Crespo perfectly translates folklore and feelings of his home into excitingly virtuosic brass music. André Previn’s Four Songs for soprano, cello and piano is a wonderful piece of truly American music. Previn composes with his trademark blend of classical and jazz idioms. The Beethoven "Triple" Concerto showcases a trio of soloists against a chamber orchestra, the only piece of this instrumentation ever composed.

PONDERING MUSIC: THE MOZART REQUIEM

Voiced words will provoke your thoughts, as they did for Mozart and Feldman in two entirely different “sound worlds.” These two profound and serious works are offset by a Bernstein trio imbued with easygoing youthfulness.

MENDELSSOHN'S MASTERWORK

The driving energy of Mendelssohn’s trio erupts into music with tremendous weight of nearly orchestral proportions grown organically out of the most clearly etched delicacy one finds in all chamber music. The mature Saint-Saëns Septet is infectiously melodic and completely exhilarating. American composer Loeffler's rhapsodies offer a delightful blend of French Impressionism and New World freshness.
