Charitable Outreach

One of ICA's founding goals is to provide musical performances and education for audiences -- especially of children and youth -- that might otherwise have little access to chamber music. ICA will accomplish this by forming educational partnerships with such organizations as the People's Music School. Located in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood, this school offers free music lessons to people of all ages. We encourage you to support us in this philanthropic mission. A student from the People's Music School will be given the unique opportunity to showcase their skills at each ICA concert this season. A portion of the proceeds from each of our concerts for the 2006-07 season will be donated to the People's Music School. On June 28, 2007, ICA will perform at the People's Music School Thursday Summer Concert Series. At that concert, ICA will present a check to the school for funds raised during our season.

The People's Music School

The school was founded in 1976 by Dr. Rita Simo in order to fulfill her vision of tuition-free, classical music education available to everyone. The People's Music School deliberately chose the Uptown neighborhood for its home because of its ethnic richness. The School's Latino, Asian, African-American, Caucasian, and Native American student body mirrors the neighborhood's rich cultural diversity. Many of the students are immigrants or the children of immigrants. Students range in age from five years old to senior citizen. There are no residency or income requirements for enrollment. During its first nineteen years of operation, the School was located in makeshift quarters. In 1995, the School found a permanent home in the heart of Uptown. Its building was designed specifically for the School and built with the financial contributions, donated labor, and materials of many generous supporters. The sunny, cheerful building houses ten lesson rooms, a piano lab for group lessons, an acoustically correct performance hall, a rooftop recital area, and a listening library.

The People's Music School provides free, high quality music instruction and performance opportunities for personal and professional growth, and cultivates an informed and appreciative audience for classical music. Their programs are open to everyone, especially to those who have little opportunity for musical instruction. The students and their families share a vital commitment to support the operation of the school. The People's Music School is a community school, and all of their ctivities are geared to create a sense of family amongst their students and families.

In learning to make and appreciate music, students develop other fine qualities. They learn how discipline can produce positive results. They gain a sense of community responsibility. And they experience the satisfaction of knowing that their commitment and hard work has made a difference in the School's ongoing success.
