ICA's INTERGALACTIC BRASS BLAST OF FEBRUARY 2016:

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

ABOUT THIS CONCERT

Each day we discover something new about our super amazing universe. The stars teem with fantastic inspiration for great music and endless curiosity. Join brass players of ICA as they bring this space experience down to earth in an exciting educational concert led by a delightful musical script designed to engage and inspire students of all ages.

Start your musical journey to the International Space Station with our crew of five Brass-tronauts playing Trumpets, French Horn, Trombone, and Tuba. Hear music that has been traveling through space since 1977 on a golden record aboard space probe Voyager 1. Costumed Brass-tronauts will act as members of the current ISS team. Students will fall in love with this amazing crew of cosmonauts through a fun combination of supercool facts and little known tidbits about life in space.

Next, visit our solar system through Gustav Holst's "The Planets". Hop aboard the New Horizons Spacecraft to celebrate new Pluto discoveries by listening to a variety of fanfares and choosing the one you best think suits all we are learning about this icy dwarf planet. In the final frontier, fly with ICA’s Brass-tronauts to galaxies far, far away as we explore space movie music favorites. This cinematic journey will be accompanied by a surprise visit from a lucky student or teacher disguised as a visitor from another galaxy!

Ideas for class activities:

        - Look at and describe what each instrument looks like

        - Listen and identify which brass instrument is playing

(What does it sound like?  Which one is higher/lower?)

Encourage students to bring questions

We will include a brief time for questions near the end of the performance.  In addition, depending on our schedule and the students’ schedules there may be a few minutes afterwards for further interaction.

Tips on being a good audience:

    - Listening happens best when you do not talk or interact with your neighbor

    - Listen with your eyes as well as your ears

    - Respond appropriately to the music: Applause is a way of saying “thank you” to the performers at the end of a piece of music.  Yelling, screaming, whistling at the end is not usually acceptable at a concert of this kind of music.

What is “International Chamber Artists?”

International – We are a group of musicians who come from a diverse background, have played in different parts of the world, and play music from all over the world.

Chamber – What we play is called chamber music.  This type of music was originally written for someone’s room (or chamber) thus it was performed by a small group.  Today it is often played just about anywhere someone can listen to it.

Artists – We are people who create art, not that you see, but hear.

POST-CONCERT INFORMATION

Every child has a different perspective as an audience member. We would love to know what your students thought and experienced during our performance. On the day of the concert an ICA member will present you with an envelope containing reflections sheets. Please ask your students to describe what they learned from the concert through artwork and or writing. An ICA member will collect them from your school post-concert.
