DANCING BRASS SEXTET

Friday, April 5, 2019 at 7:30 PM

Church of the Holy Spirit, 400 E. Westminster Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045

Sunday, April 7, 2019 at 4 PM
St. Gregory the Great Church, 5535 N. Paulina St.

Oskar Böhme – Sextet, Op. 30 (17’)
Malcolm Arnold – Brass Quintet No. 1, Op. 73 (13’)

Jules Demersseman and Felix Charles Berthelemy, arr. by Andras Adorjan – Guillaume Tell ["William tell"] duo brilliant (11’)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Quartet in D for Flute, Violin, Viola, and Cello, K. 285 (14’)

According to a letter that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote to his father, he was so delighted to receive a commission to write his Quartet in D, K. 285, that it took him just over a week to complete the entire work. The infectious melodies of Giacomo Rossini’s Guillaume Tell inspire Jules Dermersseman and Felix Charles Berthelemy’s reorchestration of the original opera into a chamber work. Dueling trumpets, blistering virtuosity, and Latin jazz are just a few of the musical intrigues in Malcom Arnold’s Brass Quintet, while Oscar Böhme’s Sextet has been called a “virtual symphony for brass.”

RITE OF SPRING

FEATURING KEITH BUNCKE, BASSOON and the

CHICAGO URBAN DANCE COLLECTIVE

Sunday, June 2, 2019 at 4 PM
St. Gregory the Great Church, 5535 N. Paulina St.

Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 4 PM

Church of the Holy Spirit, 400 E. Westminster Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045

Igor Stravinsky, NEW arr. by Cliff Colnot – The Rite of Spring (34’)

François Devienne (1759-1803) – Quartet in C Major, Op. 73 No. 1 (17')

Charles Koechlin – Sonate, Op. 71 (9')

Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) – L’Invitation au voyage* (7’) *Note: June 9th only

This French tour begins with Chabrier’s L’invitation au voyage (*Note: June 9th only), a work inspired by the poetry of Charles Baudelaire. Colorful timbres resound in François Devienne’s Quartet, which features three strings and one bassoon. And a new arrangement of Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring captures all of the elements that make this classic work still shocking today, 105 years after its riotous premiere in 1913. ICA is joined by the Chicago Urban Dance Collective for this rousing season finale.
