​James M. Stephenson imagines a hopeful future in Quartet for a New Tomorrow. Jazzy melodies drive Morton Gould’s commemoration of legendary clarinetist Benny Goodman. Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s principal trombonist Timothy Higgins will be featured as a composer and a guest artist, playing an added part in Dahl's sextet. A chamber arrangement of Saint-Saëns’s Organ Symphony offers a celebratory finale.

New music featured by the Nigerian composer and pianist Innocent Okechuwu unfolds in Rainbow for string quartet, where Okechuwu illustrates his self-described process of exploring “color as sound.” A transcription of Ludwig van Beethoven’s brilliant and captivating Piano Concerto No. 5 for piano and string quartet concludes the program.​

​A delightful miniature work for viola opens the program by Eric Coates, who began his career as a violist. Then, Gabriel Fauré’s fascinating compositional world unfolds, filled with lyrical melodies not always driven by end goals and resolution but often by circularity and stasis. Chicago’s own Filipino-American composer and arts manager Timothy Corpus offers a recent work for string quartet. And many will recognize the familiar harmonies of Stephan Koncz’s arrangement of Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1 for string quartet. Finally, this holiday concert is not complete without some of the classics, including Nutcracker selections from ICA’s composer-in-residence James Stephenson and a sing along medley!

​This once in a lifetime concert experience will have children of all ages cheering for an all-star line-up of musicians as they play themes from professional sports teams, jock jams, olympic favorites, and cherished oldies including "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." This concert experience will be fun and interactive as the children are invited to show off their athletic knowledge and skills as they join the brass players on stage to bring the music to life. Our purpose is to encourage children to hear music, make music, and play with friends in an imaginative, often educational, and entertaining way. This is a celebratory concert featuring treasured fan favorites!

Amanda Harberg — Suite for Wind Quintet (18’)

 

Ludwig van Beethoven — Quintet for Piano and Winds in E-flat major, Op. 19 (26’)

 

James M. Stephenson, ICA Composer-in-Residence — Cocoon for Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, Trombone, Percussion (closed H. H., Tombak), Harp, and Piano (13’)

 

 

Commissioned by the Dorian Wind Quintet in 2017, Amanda Harberg’s Suite for Wind Quintet features melodies that “recur” and “transform,” in the words of the composer, along with formal arrangements “inspired by the concept of placing Renaissance and Baroque-inspired dance suites into Harberg’s idiom as a 21st century composer.” Modeled after Wolfgang Mozart’s piano and wind quintet, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Quintet for Piano and Winds in E-flat major reflects Beethoven’s studies with Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) and their mutual respect of Mozart. Finally, ICA Composer-in-Residence James M. Stephenson offers the innovative work Cocoon, designed in collaboration with scientists at the National Center for Ecological Awareness and Synthesis.
