The music for this Soirée is exclusively by women composers. The finale of the program is a violin sonata dedicated to Mendelssohn’s daughter by Ethel Smyth, a woman who overcame the constraints of her middle-class English background through open rebellion. This is a profound work with tonal color at its core.

A drum dream inspired Stephenson to write The Devil’s Tale, a sequel to Stranvisky’s The Soldier’s Tale. A gripping story about love, this centers around a pit musician in a Las Vegas show, his girlfriend a dancer, and the devil - a blackjack dealer. This creative “Palindrama” also makes impressive use of palindromes, each movement is titled with one.
